Maja Sofie

Danish artist based in California

Maja Sofie is a multidisciplinary artist whose work emerges from the borderlands of nature and perception. Moving across photography, painting, text, and installation, she builds an elemental visual language shaped by fog, shadow, water, and the skeletal geometry of trees. Her practice is rooted in direct observation yet driven by an almost archaeological attention to what time erodes and what it leaves behind.

Working with restraint and a disciplined process, she reduces the world to its essentials: the way light cuts through branches, the way the ocean dissolves a horizon, the way a landscape holds both memory and disappearance. These recurring motifs form a quiet but persistent dialogue across her series, allowing each piece to echo another in tone and in spirit.

Her images operate in the space between presence and vanishing, where nature becomes both subject and metaphor. Through cycles of repetition, silence, and subtle change, her work traces the fragile moments in which the world reveals itself and then slips away again.
